Payroll Management

Master payroll for Australian employers

Running payroll in Australia comes down to a handful of jobs you repeat every pay cycle: paying staff correctly under their award or agreement, withholding the right amount of tax, paying super on time and reporting it all to the ATO. This hub collects Payroller’s guides on each of those jobs, written for small business owners, sole traders and the bookkeepers who support them.

Two obligations run through almost every guide here. The first is Single Touch Payroll: employers report wages, PAYG withholding and super to the ATO each time they pay their staff. Our Single Touch Payroll (STP) software page explains how Payroller sends that report from every pay run. The second is payroll tax, a state and territory tax that applies once your total Australian wages pass your local threshold. Rates, thresholds and due dates differ by state, so our payroll tax guide sets them out side by side.

New to payroll? Start with what payroll management involves and how to set up payroll for a new business. When you’re ready for your first pay run, sign up to Payroller and make a payslip straight from it.

Payroll information & tips

Before your first pay run, you need the right information from your business and your employees. These guides cover what to collect, how to process pay each cycle and how to keep records audit-ready, whether you run payroll for your small business yourself or use a bookkeeper.

Start with setting up payroll for a new business and payroll processing. For trickier pay runs, see our guides to public holidays and the annual wage increase. To stay compliant, read ATO compliance for payroll, which largely comes down to accurate Single Touch Payroll (STP) reporting, then work through our payroll audit checklist.

Superannuation

Payday Super is the biggest change to super in years. From 1 July 2026, employers pay super at the same time as wages, and contributions generally need to reach each employee’s fund within 7 days of payday.

Start with our Payday Super compliance guide and qualifying earnings (QE), or visit the Payday Super hub for every resource. For everyday questions, see how to pay superannuation and whether super applies to annual leave or overtime. If a payment was missed, read about the Super Guarantee Charge (SGC).
